This is an archaeological drawing of a padlock casing excavated in Linlithgow in the 1970s. This example illustrates how artefacts are drawn in a way that shows them from different angles. They are also drawn to a precise scale.
This is a medieval knife blade, made from iron. The pointed tang (on the left) would have been inserted into a handle, probably made of wood or bone, which has decayed over the centuries. |
In very wet, sealed deposits (waterlogged conditions), organic finds like this leather shoe can survive. This example was excavated in Perth. |
