Post-Excavation Services

Our specialist in-house team is very experienced, particularly in Scottish medieval and post-medieval archaeology, and has been together for a number of years, promoting good understanding and co-operation which has proved to be of great benefit to our clients, as it enables us to provide accurate estimates of post-excavation costs much faster than would be possible if we had to use outside contractors for all of this work.  We have a strong record of report preparation and publication.  The standards of our work are highly regarded by other archaeological contractors, who often contract our specialists to fulfill some of their own post-excavation needs.

Mammal and Bird Bone Studies

On many archaeological sites, remains of mammals and birds, both domesticated and wild species, are recovered. Bones are identified, their anatomical measurements taken and evidence of butchery, pathology and age at death are recorded.  The data is then analysed, and interpreted to provide a picture of the economy and environment of the site.   SUAT's archaeozoologist, Catherine Smith, has considerable experience of studying and reporting on archaeological animal bone assemblages from a wide range of sites throughout Scotland, both urban and rural, from the neolithic to the medieval period.

Ceramic Studies

Preparation of reports on Medieval and Post-medieval pottery assemblages, including fabric identification and dating, can be carried out.  This provides a chronological framework for sites, in conjunction with artefact studies.  SUAT's pottery researcher, Derek Hall, has extensive experience of writing medieval pottery reports in addition to a wealth of fieldwork experience.  He is also a founding member of the Scottish Medieval Pottery Research Group, and is currently undertaking the sourcing of Scottish Medieval White Gritty Wares.

Illustration and Graphic Design

SUAT is able to provide a full archaeological illustration service, producing site plans and artefact drawings through to reconstruction drawings.  Best use is made of modern technology and we constantly strive to keep this service upto date.  We often combine CAD-based survey data with other digitally produced images to provide high quality accurate site plans and location maps.  As well as printed plans and illustrations, we can export them in variety digital formats including the versatile PDF format and CAD.  This allows us to accurately match our clients needs.  Our illustrator, Dave Munro, has extensive experience of all of the above.
