Site Evaluation

This stage of work can follow the Desk Based Assessment as the next stage in the formal process of archaeological assessment.  Alternatively it can form the first stage of the works where the archaeological potential of the development area is known. Evaluation allows the local authority involved to seek further information about the built or buried remains on a site.

Evaluation techniques are varied and can involve one or a mix of the following techniques, Trial Trenching, Test Pitting, Geophysics, Walk Over Survey, and Standing Building Survey.

Once an evaluation has been conducted we produce a report detailing any findings and containing recommendations on how to proceed.

The identification of archaeological remains at this point does not necessarily mean that further excavations have to take place. We have extensive experience in dealing with clients, where we have been able to suggest changes to site layout and even foundation construction which have alleviated the need for further excavation.

SUAT carries out many evaluations every year, ranging from small urban redevelopment schemes to green field sites to massive urban redevelopments, such as the Scottish Parliament development.
