Desk Based Assessment
This is often the first step in the formal process of archaeological
assessment, as required by local planning authorities. In many cases planning
applications will not be considered unless this has been carried out. This
should not be confused with Pre-Planning
Consultation, as this is a formal rather than confidential
service. These assessments provide the basis for any evaluation work that may
be required.

Desk Based Assessments generally involve a search of the regional and
national Sites and monuments records, archival material, bibliographic
sources, aerial photographs, and cartographic sources. Desk Based Assessments can be combined combined with walkover surveys to provide the archaeological section of Environmental Impact Assessments, as required by NPPG 42. |
