SUAT's Outreach Work

Our main outreach project in recent years was in connection with the excavations at Caerlaverock Castle in Dumfriesshire, where we were able to present the excavation of the old castle site to over 10,000 visitors, through guided tours and hands-on activities.  Also as part of that project we staged a detailed on-site exhibition and maintained a popular web site ( for further details click here ).

We also carry out outreach work in Perthshire and Fife, visiting schools to give talks and conduct object-handling activities. Occasionally we also give guided tours of local monuments to interested school groups, and, where possible, give guided tours of our excavations.  We have taken part in educational events organised by the Council for Scottish Archaeology (CSA), museums and local authorities across Scotland, and we endeavour to make our work as accessible as possible to the public, especially to young people.  The photos here illustrate some recent outreach activities.

Perth Young Archaeologists

This is a branch of the Young Archaeologists Clubs Scottish Network, co-ordinated by the CSA.  The branch was launched in June 1997 and the co-leaders are Adrian Cox and Sarah Winlow.  The aim is to give children between 8 and 16 years of age from the Perthshire area opportunities to learn about archaeology in an informal setting. The branch currently has around 20 members.  To find out more about the branch's activities, check out the Perth YAC website.
