The Caerlaverock Dig

Caerlaverock Castle

With spectacular views over the Solway Firth and the distant Lakeland fells, Caerlaverock Castle in Dumfriesshire is among the most impressive in Britain. There are in fact two castles here. The present castle replaced an earlier one, dating from the 13th century, which lies around 200 metres to its south-east, in an area of wooded marshland. On behalf of Historic Scotland, SUAT carried out excavations here during 1998 and 1999.

As part of this project we organised a very successful programme of outreach activities and were able to present the excavations to over 10,000 visitors through guided tours, an on-site exhibition and interative activities. We also maintained a popular web site, giving the latest results from the dig as they unfolded. Post-excavation analysis of the results of the dig is now complete and the results have been published.
