Finds Archiving and Processing

Artefacts from two major sites sponsored by Historic Scotland have been successfully archived this year:  the finds from the Holyrood Parliament site were accepted by Edinburgh City Council, and those from Caerlaverock Old Castle are now at Historic Scotland’s stores at Croft an Righ.  Unfortunately, no developer-funded sites (disposed through the Treasure Trove system) have found homes in museums this year.  Although we have continued to make use of a small amount of unstratified and modern pottery and objects in our own outreach events, the time will soon come when unpleasant decisions about discarding objects will have to be made, due to lack of storage space.

As usual, the number of boxes leaving SUAT has been balanced by the quantity of unwashed material arriving from sites such as Stenhouse kilns.  This has now all been processed through the valiant efforts of our finds staff and occasional volunteers throughout the summer.  We have also made a major effort to discard or recycle items such as unprocessed soil samples and broken tools which had come to rest in our Brackens store.
