Historic Scotland funded projects
Historic Scotland commissioned SUAT to carry out a survey of monastic saltpans, coal mines, lead workings, tile kilns and other industrial sites. This project came out of our previous granges survey where it was clear that there was a lot of information available regarding these poorly studied sites. At the time of writing the fieldwork element has now been completed and the results are being written up and considered by the project members. Probably one of the most striking areas visited is in South Lanarkshire where there is an entire forgotten landscape of lead mines and workings and the occasional gold working spot.
